UNO Chicago Grill

Uno Chicago Grill is a fun, gluten free friendly place to eat with the whole family.

“The company’s gluten-free menu was launched in 2006 and has over 30 items ranging from entrées, salads, sides, beverages and desserts.  Choices include Baked Stuffed Chicken – with broccoli, spinach, tomatoes and cheese, lemon basil salmon and Certified Angus Beef® steaks,” and of course yummy Gluten Free Pizza!

I’ve heard of people that eat there and say after leaving that there was no evidence of a gluten free menu, so if you don’t see it, ASK for it!

I’ve also seen people post on our Face book page that they would never eat there because Uno uses the same ovens for both the gluten free and the regular pizzas, which by the way, almost all restaurants do that make GF pizza, although I have never contacted one that doesn’t take extra precautions. I contacted the company and got a very extensive response from Kacey Bogue, Senior Hospitality Representative (June 10, 2010):

“All our pizzas are cooked in the same ovens. However, the design of our ovens and the pans we use to cook the gluten free pizzas dramatically reduce the chances of cross contamination. When the gluten free pizza is ordered, the individually wrapped gluten-free pizza is removed from the freezer and placed directly into a heavy gauge, high sided, perforated pan to protect the pizza from belt contaminants while cooking.

Established systems require that a separate gluten and allergen-free preparation area is used in the kitchen. That area is cleaned and sanitized regularly, and also directly preceding any gluten-free meal
preparation.

Our procedures include the use of fresh vinyl gloves, new aprons and newly sanitized utensils when preparing gluten and allergen-free dishes. Newly sanitized cutting boards, pots, pans, and plate-ware are also used to ensure a safe dining experience for each guest.

On our website we write: “UNO Chicago Grill goes to tremendous strides to identify all forms of gluten and gluten derivatives in the foods we purchase or prepare in house… however, we cannot be responsible for individual reactions to any food products or guarantee that the food we
serve is free from any allergen.”

Our managers are eager to assist our customers with any questions and in supervising the preparation of their food should our guests feel that extra precautions need to be taken. We hope that they will never hesitate to ask.”

I would be careful about going to Uno’s for gluten free pizza. I was so excited to be able to go out with my husband and have GF pizza. Unfortunately, within 15 minutes of leaving the restaurant, I was running to find a bathroom. I had a very bad reaction to the alleged GF pizza. When I called the company to complain, they offered me certificates for their restaurant. I proceeded to tell them that I wouldn’t be going back there after my violent reaction so the certificates would be of no use. The best they could do was send me a refund.

I didn’t get sick, but they were so slow that everyone else was done before my pizza even came.
