Study: Non-Celiac Wheat Sensitivity Confirmed [again]

August 1, 2012 by

Studies confirming non-celiac wheat and gluten sensitivity are beginning to emerge. It doesn’t take a study to prove its existence to those who experience it, but each time one confirms that it is a recognized medical condition, it vindicates those who claim to have it.

The American Journal of Gastroenterology published findings this week of a study demonstrating the existence of non-celiac wheat sensitivity and segmenting two kinds of the condition: those with characteristics more similar to CD and the other with characteristics pointing to food allergy.

My son has had this since he was 13 months old! He is allergic to wheat but not celiac! It is a true allergy , but it is way manageable!

  2. Amy says:

I’m a physician who was given the diagnosis of IBS years ago, it wasn’t until recently that I figured out if I don’t eat gluten, my GI system has ZERO problems, same turned out to be true for at least 4 of my family members who clearly share the same mutation. I recommend everyone who has been told they have IBS to cut out all gluten for just a week & see if they find they don’t have to run for the bathroom after every meal. I obviously do not have celiac spry, but am 100% certain of my gluten sensitivity!

I have always been allergic to wheat since I was a baby, however now I can’t eat wheat/gluten. So it is a true allergy and since I was first diagnosed with the allergy products have become better even tastier. It is hard once in a while, but it is my life and I really don’t mind. One can make the transfer to a Gluten Free diet if they know the best products out there.

I had been sick since I was 7. My parents were always taking me to the dr. I would get very sick and throw up for 3 to 5 days. I worked for a dr office when i was 25. She had seen me get sick sometimes after lunch. She suggested I stop eating wheat. It worked immediately. I was usually sick 3 to 4 times a month. I have amazing friends family and husband. It took me 2 years to get my body right. I also suffer from gastropersis. I was gluten free for 3 months and my dr. was sure my test would come back right. I actually called a specialist in Texas and inquired about being gluten free and testing. They stated it would come back clean. I tested negative for celiac. I had the biopsy done and was diagnosed positive.Guess what going wheat and gluten free saved my life.. I can’t get a tax break which would be nice! I highly recommend anyone with stomach or allergy issues; hives try going gluten free.

My daughters, one of which has a sever intolerance to gluten, spent this summer with my in laws. During that time, my daughter with the allergy was told I was putting this allergy, that was diagnosed by a Dr, in her head, until finally they gave her gluten and she was horribly ill for 3 days. I too have a severe intolerance, which my in laws said was also in my head. The fact that in the 2 years my daughter and I have been off gluten, we have both gotten healthier and my daughter who used to be malnourished and refused to eat, is now a healthy energetic 8 year old, seems to mean nothing. I dont understand why people doubt an allergy, or intolerance, or whatever that has been proven time and time again to exist. It is so frustrating. What kind of parent would brain wash her own child? It is really hurtful but I know the truth and so does mine and my daughters Doctors and I guess that is what matters.

  6. De says:

My 6 yr old son has wheat/gluten allergy, buy not CD. Try as hard as we have, we’re still unable to get him to eat ANY type of GF break — any brand, not even homemade. Other than that, he’s GF.

  7. Rick says:

Wish a gluten free diet would cure me. I have been diagnosed with
CD by blood test and biopsy. I have been following the diet strickty
for a few years now, but still have symptoms.

  8. Melissa says:

    Rick-
Many people who are allergic to gluten are also allergic to dairy.

I would do a food allergy test as well as a food intolerance test. The second one is one that people are more likely to discover something that they were eating that was causing an immune response. You could try going off dairy for at least 4 weeks and see of that helps.

  9. Lee says:

I went to the Doc in 2007 complaining of a constant gnawing feeling, similar to intense hunger pains. I asked if it could be related to something I was eating. The doc brushed that suggestion off saying that I had indigestion and gave me a presciption for an indigestion med. That med helped a little bit, but didn’t totally alleviate. I was given another prescription, same result. Was sent for an endoscopy, was told that I have IBS and was prescribed a stronger med. When I balked at that diagnosis because I wasn’t suffering from diarrhea or constipation, I was told that in the absence of a concrete diagnosis they call it IBS. A couple of months later my insurance company told me they would no longer cover my prescriptions. I got angry and threw them out and decided that I would do an elimination diet. After talking to a friend whose son had a similar complaint, she suggested the culprit as being gluten. Having nothing to lose, I gave it a try. Within 3 days I was feeling a world better. I can’t believe that I wasted 3 years going to the doctor, when my first suspicion was a food allergy. Too bad the doc didn’t listen to me and maybe suggest trying the elimination diet before all the pills and tests.

  10. Linda says:

Not only do I have sensitivities to gluten and dairy, I have the same sensitivities to corn. I don’t notice the gut reaction to corn immediately, but do get inflammation in certain joints. With Gluten and dairy I have a hay fever type reaction, first, then the gut always follows. I don’t have CD, but most definitely allergic to gluten and dairy. I wonder if there is any relation between this sensitivity and Crohns disease? It runs in my family…

I know I feel better when I don’t eat gluten, dairy or corn.
