Kelloggs announced impressive second quarter earnings, thanks, in part to  the recently launched Rice Krispies Gluten Free cereal, according to John Bryant, President and CEO of Kellogg Company.

Bryant reports, “We are targeting Rice Krispies Gluten Free to a passionate community and as a result, it was the #1 selling Kellogg product on Amazon in June.”

Read the transcript of the earnings call here. http://seekingalpha.com/article/282691-kellogg-s-ceo-discusses-q2-2011-results-earnings-call-transcript

Gluten Free Rice Krispies are on many store shelves now, or find Gluten Free Rice Krispies on Amazon for as little as $13.52 for a 4-pack including free shipping (for members.)

Here’s my review of the Gluten Free Rice Krispies from May:

NEW Kellogg’s Rice Krispies Gluten Free Cereal

May 5, 2011

What goes snap, crackle, pop, and is gluten free? You guessed it – NEW Kellogg’s® Rice Krispies® Gluten Free cereal. Due out in stores in a few weeks, these Rice Krispies taste extremely similar to the original ones that you remember before going Gluten Free, complete with snapping, crackling, and popping.

Kellogg’s says, “After hearing from so many gluten-free families out there, we’re happy to bring you NEW Kellogg’s® Rice Krispies® Gluten Free cereal, made with brown rice.  It’ll be available in June, so be sure to ask your local supermarket to stock up! The new cereal is made with whole-grain brown rice and eliminates barley malt (the source of gluten in the original Rice Krispies® cereal). Our gluten-free option is produced in a separate facility, and each batch will be tested to ensure its gluten-free status. You’ll find Rice Krispies® Gluten Free cereal in the cereal aisle, right alongside the original Rice Krispies® cereal, and at the same price, too! So now your kids can enjoy a bowlful for breakfast, and they won’t miss out on the timeless taste of homemade Rice Krispies Treats® marshmallow squares.”

Ingredients: Whole grain brown rice, sugar, contains 2% or less of salt, BHT for freshness.

Vitamins and Minerals: Iron, vitamin C (ascorbic acid), vitamin E (alpha tocopherol acetate), niacinamide, vitamin A palmitate, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride), vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B1 (thiamin hydrochloride), folic acid, vitamin D, vitamin B12.

Kellogg’s was kind enough to include the familiar recipe (below) with the cereal they sent me to try out, so I decided in order to give this cereal a fair trial, I would have to make the Gluten-Free Rice Krispie Treats® as well! I threw in a handful of chocolate chips and they were awesome. They don’t call them “Treats” for nothing! As usual, they were excellent and there was still enough cereal in the box for a few bowls, too.

Every few months, more great and affordable gluten free products are showing up on grocery shelves. Thanks, Kellogg’s! And while you’re listening to the gluten free community, please make some gluten free Pop-Tarts!!

This is so cool :) And gluten free Rice Crispy TREATS!! You’re making me drool. I’m so old, when I was a little kids, RC treats were only made at Halloween. Home made only, not available in stores. And we only went to five houses for trick-or-treating, three neighbors and two relatives. Sounds like a hundred years ago, eh? Ha ha.

Some comments on this post from our Facebook page -

    293 people like this.

Tisha McGee Williams: My two kids love this cereal….since they are Celiac Patients….thank you for bringing this out Kelloggs

Michelle Palin: I hope they’ll consider making some other gluten-free cereals too since they’ve seen positive results with this one!

Rachel Pavao: i love it! have mine with banans.. going to try to make a granola bar with them and udi’s granola and some goodies

Amy Lile Raney: Finally!! Decent tasting rice krispy treats.

Jeannine Klink: Spencer Both BHA and BHT have undergone the additive application and review process required by the US Food and Drug Administration. However, the same chemical properties which make BHA and BHT excellent preservatives may also be implicated in health effects. The oxidative characteristics and/or metabolites of BHA and BHT may contribute to carcinogenicity or tumorigenicity; however the same reactions may combat oxidative stress. There is evidence that certain persons may have difficulty metabolizing BHA and BHT, resulting in health and behavior changes. BHA and BHT may have antiviral and antimicrobial activities. Research is underway concerning the use of BHT in the treatment of herpes simplex and AIDS.

Chris Elton: My son said he finally has a good gluten free cereal…thanks kellogs

Caroline Seckel: Thank goodness, finally a gluten free cereal thats affordable and best of all it tastes good.

Kathleen Benner: These are delicious! And they taste just like “regular” rice crispie treats! :)

Dawn Kain Alger: My daughter thinks they ares great. thank you Kelloggs.

Heather LeBlanc: been loking for them, haven’t seen them yet

Jeannine Klink Spencer: BHT is also found in Chex gluten free cereals. Why?

Terry J. Wood: They’re a hit with me. I haven’t had Rice Krispies for 6 years until last week. It was eating regular Rice Krispies that gave me a clue that I had a problem with gluten. I remember reading the ingredients and wondering “What the heck is MALT?” A quick Google search revealed the bad news that malt was gluten. The rest, as they say, is history!

So it’s good to see what should have been a natural for celiacs finally being made! (I’ve missed you Snap, Krackle and Pop!)

Christiana Finch: Maybe they won’t be so eager to shut down the idea of other gluten free cereals now that they realize what a powerful market we are!

Anna Chapman: I know this isn’t rice krispies but I picked up my first box of Gluten free chex today!!!!

Maria Spiteri: Are they new cos they were not gluten free these last few yrs???

Gluten Freeville: Heather- They are available from Amazon at the link in the article for $3.38 per box for 4 boxes ~nancy

Terry J. Wood: ‎@Michelle Palin: I just love the Chex serials that are GF. If Tony the Tiger was a Celiac, he say “THEY’RE GRRRRRREAT! :-)

Janet Slater: Finally found them locally and my kids love them!!!

Anna Chapman: Walmart also carries them!

Megan Fulsom: I have eaten like an entire batch of rice krispie treats every week since these came out…i am so happy they are out…and they taste exctly the same…no one knows they are gf :)

    Heather LeBlanc: thanks

Martina Webster: Yeah Maria, they had malt (which is made from barley)

Gluten Freeville: Maria- The regular Rice Krispies are not gluten free. They contain barley malt. Wheat, barley and rye all have gluten. ~nancy

Ruth Capes: Anyone know a shop that stocks them?

Gluten Freeville: Ruth- They are in most major grocery stores or should be there soon. Amazon carries them at the link in the article. ~nancy

Nadya King: Yes – my son gets these at his mainstream store for his nieces when they visit, & made GF rice krispy treats! Fun

Katherine Moter: I love that they are also low in sugar and dairy free. Between being gluten intolerant, allergic to dairy, and diabetic, this cereal ends up being perfect for me, which is really hard to find on the market(outside of some of the chex cereals)

Kristi Fossier Gueho: We love them!! My son and I made some last night and there’s not many left. I appreciate that Kellogg’s did not jack up the price and skimp on the ounces just because its gluten free!!

Mitchell Jaspan: Add fruity pebbles and cocoa pebbles to the list store said they will have the rice krispies soon. Wife and daughter are very happy. Watch for the marked boxes they are being mixed in with the old stuff.

Jen Rubio: ‎@Ruth, A friend told me walmart was carrying them. I found them at Target , Raley’s and safeway

Robyn Marie: Finally found them at my local walmart .. Stoked !! They are awesome with banana slices !! Yum !!

Ruth Capes: Nancy – cheers its so difficult to find things in portion sizes and suitability for a 2 year old!

Kristi Fossier Gueho: By made some I mean we made rice krispy treats and my local walmart sell them for $3.12 a box, which is the same cost as regular rice krispies!

Maria Spiteri: Yes I know tks a lot…I will see if in Malta we have gluten free ones now :)

Nadya King: And he also didn’t catch the malt in earlier cereals ….”everyone said no WHEAT, … ” ( Hmm, I though we said “everything needs to be free of gluten!! ” )

Susan Kramer: Just bought them yesterday! Now why don’t they revert to their old recipe and make Corn Pops gf??

Shera Lynn: Made Rice Krispies treats for my little girl who has celiac and she loved them! Thank you for this wonderful GF product! :)

Jennifer Lea Lane: are they casein free also?

Angela Nussbaum: has anyone had a bad experiance? ive had 2 weeks ago and i was suddenly very sick. it was the only change in items i had.

Gluten Freeville: Jennifer- The ingredients are listed in the article at the link above. ~nancy

Michele Pink: They’re really good. It’s nice 2 eat Rice Krispies again. The only supermarket I can find them in (in my area) is Shoprite.

Beth Jones: I’m amused by all the people upset that the GF version has BHT. ALL of the Rice Krispies line has BHT in there. :)

Annie-Laurie Hunter: They are also great with blueberries and strawberries. If your local grocery store does not have them, ask for them. Grocery stores are frequently willing to accomodate customers. I asked at my store and they had them the next week.

Megan Bekele Kinnear: when did this hit the supermarkets? I haven’t seen it in MA yet.

Fran Walton: They get soggy way too fast

Diane Gollinge Schafer: My daughter (8 years old) was so excited when we saw the coming soon ad for these, she loved her Rice Krispies and now she can eat them again. Thank you Kellogg’s for making these!!!!!

Angela Mihaylov: My 3 year old is happy to have her sticky krispies and it is nice for mom that they no longer cost me 6 dollars a box to make like when we had to buy the other brand

Erica Rodman: The ingredients are similar to the Chex rice cereal that is gluten free too and I get sick every time I try to eat it. :(

Missy Richard: I love them! Thank you Kelloggs!

Teri Knight: The only problem……………my hubby likes them too so they are a GF product he leaves for me!! Love them!

Suzanne Dupuis-Blanchard: Just bought 4 boxes at Wal-Mart during my vacation in the US since Canada doesn’t carry GF rice krispies…can’t wait to make rice krispies treats!!

    Robin Sims Otte: LOVE IT!!!

Corrine Anderson Pulley: YES…they are delicious!!!!!

Jac White: I have a box in my cupboard :)

Sandy Olson Brown: Found them at walmart !!!!

    Kathy Morgan Griffith: Totally awesome!

Kelly Hoffman Bates :Just found them at Winco, and they had increased the price by 30 cents over the non- GF Rice Krispies. Still cheaper than many other GF cereals! We just made our first batch of Rice Krispy Treats and can’t wait to try them!

Sandy Neely-Hoffman: too bad they cost twice as much as regular and are NEVER included when reg ones are on sale!

Jeannine Klink Spencer: Beth, it might be amusing, but not to me. I never ate the other either. BHT is NOT healthy. It is an ingredient in jet fuels, rubber, petroleum products, electrical transformer oil, and embalming fluid. The MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for BHT says the following: Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Combustible. Ingestion causes Abdominal pain. Confusion. Dizziness. Nausea. Vomiting. The substance may have effects on the liver. The substance is harmful to aquatic organisms. Perhaps this is why some people complain they feel bad. If you can handle it in your system, then enjoy. But there are other gluten free cereals that are w/o this added preservative. They cost more, yes, and that stinks, but they are better for you in the long run. I too was very excited about this cereal and the Chex until I did some research. You just can’t rely on the FDA and ceo’s to have our best interest.

Erin Maynard: I guess my daughter and I are the only ones who think they don’t have any flavor. Now I know what the malt does for them. I do wish we liked them. Oh well; we won’t like everything.

Mike Kauspedas: tastes good, and makes me faster on my bike, it’s true and proven with science!

Mary Loka Balko: Can’t wait to find some in my area!

Annie-Laurie Hunter: They are in Tops, Wegmans, and Price Chopper as well as Walmart.

Jennifer Rothenberger-Melton: Absolutely love them !!!

Claudia Polanco-Vazquez: I love these we were able to make rice krispies treats again, but now they are better they are gf!!!!!!

Kelly Leigh Pizzarella: we just found them at food lion here in NC not even at Walmart here, we love them

Marisol Carrero: I can’t find them in CT. I did find cocoa pebbles- fruity and chocolate. I also found treats. They taste delicious.

Deanna Jessee Stampfly: My kids are thrilled. Rice Krispie treats that taste good!

Kimberly Hatcher Nickel: My 15 yr old twins and I have celiac so we were excited when we heard that Kellogs was going to make GF Rice Krispies. Yet once we tried them we were very disappointed because they are nothing like the original. :-(

Beth Jones: For those concerned with BHT, Fruity Pebbles has BHA in it which is a very similar compound, another synthetic Vitamin E

Lori Johnson Barbour: Also loving the coco pebbles treats.. yum!

Donna Braley: YEAH I love rice kripsies!!!

Jill Thomas: They’d be even more of a hit if they didn’t cost twice as much as a regular box…

Debbie Platt Bluestein: It’s about time!! So excited!!

Gluten Freeville: They cost as little as 3.83 a box on Amazon every day. Link is in the article. The Gluten Free ones are less than the regular ones there.

Debbie Platt Bluestein: Thank you so much!!

Patricia Campbell: You’re probably still safe because it’s rice, but I won’t be buying them because of the BHT, and because I think Kellogg’s has jut jumped onto a bandwagon and doesn’t care ultimately about any of its ingredients. If it were corn or another product, you could bet it’s GMO. Even though Kellogg’s doesn’t sell products with GMO’s to its European markets.

April Long: I haven’t seen it in PA yet.

    Melody Furr: Friend love them!!!!!

Trisha Kramer Lustig: I LOVE THESE…welcome back rice krispy/ice cream cakes…I love you so!

Brenda Brown Reeves: Would love to try for our family but have not been able to find any. None in Target or Genaurdi’s.

Rebecca Newkirk: My Granddaughter loves them!

Nancy Arneson Neal: neither of my 2 celiac daughters like them. We bought a box, tried with milk and then rice krispie treats. No flavor for either. Why can’t they just take the malt out of the regular rice krispies?

RJ Pisani: Love them, can’t even tell the difference! AND they have them at Walmart!

Shannon Buchanan: when are the coming to canada

    Catherine Shea Lavallee: there delish!!!!!!

Lara Stapleford: bought them yesterday and I feel like SH*T! Will NOT be buying these again! I feel the same way when I eat fruity pebbles. Just cuz it says gluten-free doesn’t mean it truly IS. I hate that these companies can slap a label of Gluten Free on it when it obviously ISN’T. =(

Athena Theodorakis: I bought some and haven’t felt right for the better part of the last 2 weeks, but couldn’t pinpoint anything, and last night it hit me that maybe they were the culprit. It is validating to see others say the same thing, at least I may not be imagining it.

Athena Theodorakis: I noted how close the prices were at the store tonight too, and figured that there was a good tip that these were probably made in common equipment, etc.

Gluten Freeville: They are not made on common equipment. They have their own gluten free facility and test for gluten free status. Details are in the article. ~nancy

April Empowered Larsen: seriously – weren’t they always?

Chris Redman Kachadoorian: They are so good. After I took my first bite, I checked the box to make sure they were the GF ones! There is no difference between them. :)

Chris Redman Kachadoorian: PS: I had no gluten reaction and I would get sick almost immediately if I was going to get sick. Just finished off my first box with no ill effects

Linda Weaver: Yeah! Good news! I have been making rice chez gluten free treats! Looks like we might be on our way to more gluten free foods in our local groceries!

    Tracie Lynch-Cash: about time!

    Amy L Walters-Bassler: Been looking….

Carol Klanchar: My son loves them! Thanks so much for making them gluten free!

Susan Herman: I still can’t find them. Anyone seen them in MD?

Debra Toedtemeier: Not nearly as good as I had been hoping for…

Kathryn Schroll Maurin: i easily react and have been fine with all of these products
