Texas Chicken Fried Steak and Cream Gravy (gluten free)

By: Nancy

This is the cut of meat Texas Roadhouse told me they use - they also slice it thin. My husband and I grew up in Texas and most of our family lives in the south, so we just have to make this now and then.

Ingredients

    Steak:

    • 1 1/2 pounds sirloin steak, sliced about 1/4 - 1/2 thick You can have them cut it at the grocery store meat counter if you can't find thin sliced
    • About 1 1/2 cups All purpose GF flour
    • Dash of salt and pepper
    • 1 cup milk
    • Vegetable or Canola oil for frying

    Gravy:

    • About 2 Tablespoons of oil left over from frying steak
    • 2 GF Chicken bullion cubes
    • Pepper to taste
    • 2 cups milk
    • 1/4 cup all purpose GF flour
    Directions
    1. Pour oil in a frying pan to cover about 1/4 inch deep (you may need to add more as they are cooking to keep the bottom of the pan covered.) Preheat on medium heat.
    2. Pour 1 cup of milk in a bowl
    3. Mix about 1 1/2 cups of all purpose flour, salt and pepper to taste on a plate
    4. Dip the steak, one piece at a time in the milk, then into the flour mixture until well coated.
    5. Drop the coated steak pieces into the heated oil and cook until crispy and brown- about 10 minutes on the first side and 5 on the second side.) Use a wide spatula to turn or you may lose the coating. Add more oil if the bottom of the pan is not covered at all times
    6. When each piece is done, place them on a paper towel and turn the burner off while you mix the gravy.
    7. Drain off all the oil until only about 2 Tablespoons are left in the pan, some crispy coating pieces are good to leave in as well.
    8. Add 2 GF Chicken bullion cubes to the oil.
    9. Mix 2 cups milk with 1/4 cup of flour and a dash of pepper with a fork until it's not lumpy.
    10. Pour that mixture into the pan and turn it on low or medium low. Stir constantly until thickened.
