Doughboys Pizzeria – La Pizza Senza Glutenata – Product Review
This is not a review of Doughboys Pizzeria and Trattoria, in the Central Californian Coastal town of Grover Beach, near Arroyo Grande. Sadly, I’ve never been there, but when our Facebook friend, Tracy Haughton gave this review, I had to try it! “If you are traveling on CA-101 through the Central Coast of California, I recommend that you make a stop in Arroyo Grande for the most amazing GF pizza @ Doughboy’s A true hole-in-the-wall, with a wonderfully friendly staff. While we were there 4 out of the 8 customers who came in ordered from the GF menu. The best GF pizza. Ever.”
I went straight to the website. To my delight, they actually do HOME delivery, not just in the neighborhood, but to anywhere in the U.S.
Their menu is so enticing that it’s difficult to decide what to order. I picked a couple of plain pizza crusts and a whole pizza. They call their pizza La Pizza Senza Glutenata, and it is made in the restaurant with a gluten free flour blend (no ingredients on the site) and now also sold in several Southern California stores. All of Doughboys’ pizzas and crusts for home delivery come in small and medium. The medium was enough to feed my 3 or 4 people. The plain crusts were $10 for the medium and the hefty Meat Lover’s Pizza was $19.95 for the medium but must have weighed a few pounds on its way into the oven.
I hesitate to make the following claim since I have several other brands of pizza in my freezer that I have yet to try as I write this, but this pizza was the best at home gluten free pizza I’ve had to date. You can almost imagine sitting in a noisy and dimly lit little Italian cafe in the heart of NYC. This is the pizza that would show up at your table. Thick, slightly spicy sauce sits on the chewy/crispy herb-filled crust. Not very thick, but not too thin. My pizza had lots of cheese with a nice assortment of meats – ham, salami, pepperoni and sausage. It felt very restaurant-ish and not home made, which for me, is one of the keys to a good pizza.
The shipping cost was $13 for a $43 order. That’s a bit much for my pizza habit, but for a special occasion or if I’m passing through central California, I will most definitely order this awesome pizza again. Until then, I will live on the memory.
Choose from three types of sauces if you order the full made pizza: tomato sauce, white sauce or pesto sauce. Select any of their specialty pizza combinations or choose your own toppings. Doughboys will honor special requests of no cheese, soy cheese, and other requests.
