(gluten free, dairy free, soy free, nut free: dedicated GF facility)

There is suddenly no shortage of creative chefs cracking the code of combining a variety of nontraditional grains and ingredients to create some fabulous gluten free breads.

At Canyon Bakehouse – they have just such a creative team. Owners, Josh and Christi Skow (Josh is a baker and Christi has celiac) teamed with Master Baker Ed Miknevicius, and after some commiserating about the lack of good tasting and healthy gluten free breads, Canyon Bakehouse was born.

Cinnamon Raisin Gluten Free Bread

I was happy to see this raisin bread in the package they sent me. I’ve tried several other GF raisin breads that have really missed the mark, but this cinnamon bread is heavenly! This bread takes me back to the childhood days of cinnamon toast midnight snacks with my mom. A generous portion of large, juicy raisins, crunchy sunflower seeds and the overwhelming scent of cinnamon are the first things you notice about this bread. It is soft and airy and tastes incredible. Healthier gluten free flours and a sprinkling of sesame seeds top off this great loaf of bread.

Ingredients: Brown Rice Flour, Water, Raisins, Tapioca Flour, Whole Grain Sorghum Flour, Garbanzo Bean Flour, Eggs, Organic Agave Syrup, Sunflower Seeds, Xanthan Gum, Cinnamon, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Yeast, Cultured Corn Starch, Sesame Seeds, Sea Salt, Apple Cider Vinegar, Sugar.

Mountain White Bread & San Juan 7 Grain Gluten Free Bread

I’m always surprised when I open up a bag of gluten free bread and it is airy and flexible. It happens very rarely. So – I was surprised at the nice consistency of these breads right away. They are moist and aren’t crumbly, and a little heavy – in a good way. These very flavorful breads are great sandwich breads. I gave these two breads my PB& J test – made a sandwich, wrapped it in foil, and came back to it four hours later – as if it were in a lunchbox. They both passed and were just as good after the four hours, which is no small feat, since only one other brand I’ve tried has ever passed that test. These are tastiest when toasted, though, in my humble opinion, and in the turkey sandwich on toast test they scored even higher. I made some really delicious garlic toast on the 7 grain as well!

These look absolutely delicious BUT I wish those who are working in the gluten free bread baking world would start taking into consideration how many folks have allergies beyond gluten. As one of the many who can’t eat milk, wheat, soy, or corn my options are FAR more limited than those who are GF only and just once I’d like to click on a bread review of something I could eat. I have a friend who is celiac and when we go out to eat we joke that if I can eat it, he can eat it but if he can eat it, there’s only a 1 in 4 chance I can.

Liz- I understand your disappointment at not seeing reviews of bread that leave out all your allergens. Unfortunately, I’m not sure people have figured out how to make good bread without all that other stuff! If I ever find a good one, I’ll review it :-) and if you find one- let me know.

I just came across this post while searching for restaurants serving gluten-free items. After calling several restaurants on your list, none seem to serve the gluten-free bread you’ve written about. Also, I shop and Trader Joe’s all the time and have never seen these products there. How was this list compiled?

Kelly- Canyon Bakehouse is served at many restaurants and sold at many stores -all listed above (according to canyon Bakehouse, that is -it’s their list.) Very few restaurants serve gluten free bread at all, but it would be nice if more did! You can also order it online.

Trader Joe’s mostly carries their own brand, and I have reviewed 2 of their snack products in the product reviews section, but since there are mixes I like better than theirs, I haven’t reviewed them. I find their GF selection pretty small.

I get most of the things I review at Whole Foods or my local health food store, and although we don’t have a Kroger here, my son gets most of the things I review at his Kroger or Whole Foods.I do order some things online as well.

I went to Sunflower today on the east side of Tucson and no one had heard of it that I spoke with. I was bummed and hoping to have a sandwich for lunch. Will be checking out the other local locations as I can to see if I can find them.

I am interested in any reviews on petosa gluten free products being offered at most Fry’s locally in Tucson. I have seen it at the rita ranch and rancho sahuarita locations. Many mix options.

thanks for your site. I find it interesting to read. If anyone has better luck on where the bread is in tucson let me know I’ll get some. I like to buy locally if possible.
    Thanks
    Chris

    Hi Chris,
Canyonbake House was and perhaps still is exclusive to Whole Foods. I would try there the next time.
