Suddenly Trendy!
Living gluten free is suddenly trendy – and thank goodness it is. When we began this journey we were freaks. In California, vegetarian has always been in. Vegan is in, but gluten free? Huh? No one ever heard of that. Over the past few years, the number of products, articles, books, medical reports, and websites that revolve around gluten free diets abound.
Last week, Starbucks, the barometer of modern American society, began selling lots of tasty gluten free snacks, so we know gluten free is here to stay. We’re not crazy hippie eaters any more. We are “trendy.”
When my son complained of a long list of vague symptoms including everything from lethargy to mild depression to dizziness to severe “brain fog,” our quest began to solve the mystery.
After much testing several doctors informed us that he had to go gluten free. We were a little apprehensive, but were desperate to try anything. So, we stopped Whole Foods on the way home and bought everything gluten free we could find to give it a try, but he mostly eat steak and vegetables for the first month. Half way through the first day of the new gluten free diet, my son, who was pretty much non-functional at that point, began to feel better. It was a long trip back to health, and the key was definitely leaving behind all things gluten.
We’re not usually thrilled to be trendy, but every time my son or I find a new gluten free product in our gluten-filled world, we celebrate and text each other the joyous news and location. That is happening much more often than it used to.
