Are you trying to expand your current diet options? Then this handy guidebook by Matison & Matison may just what you need!

The NEW 2012/2013 Edition of Cecelia’s Marketplace Gluten-Free Grocery Shopping Guide is here! In observance of Celiac Disease Awareness month, a percentage of the proceeds from of the NEW GUIDE will be going to Celiac Disease Research Centers and nonprofit organizations in May 2012…All products have been re-verified Gluten Free and thousands of new products have been added. Pre-publishing sales are going on right now (expected ship date: May 29).

The new version of this shopping guide now has 45,000+ verified gluten free items that can be found in local US grocery stores, and 3,000+ gluten free over the counter pharmacy items.

This easy to use 4.5″ x 6.5″ book now lists over 45,000+ thousand gluten-free products that are available nationwide. Popular brands like Heinz, Kraft, Del Monte, Frito Lay, as well as supermarket chains, such as Kroger, Wal-Mart, Publix, Safeway, Wegmans, Albertsons, Hy-Vee, Meijer, and more. Just pick a product, look it up, and all the gluten-free brands are at your fingertips. This comprehensive gluten-free food list has helped thousands of grocery shoppers that are on a gluten-free diet. This guide is designed for people with celiac disease, gluten intolerance and gluten sensitivity

If you are an experienced gluten free shopper, it may be a little more than you need, but even so, you may just find some brands you didn’t really consider were gluten free. For example, the chip section lists many commonly found brands that are gluten free by ingredient, but not necessarily marketed as gluten free products.

It’s pretty easy to see right away which breads are gluten free, if any, in your grocery store, but maybe you’d like help with things like seasonings, sauces and salad dressings. Turn to “S” and you have hundreds of products right at your fingertips! You don’t have to buy the expensive specialty seasonings when you know which Durkee or McCormick spices are okay. In case of ingredient changes, you still have to scan the label and check, but it’s easier than reading every bottle on the shelf or constantly calling manufacturers if you have a list you can start with.

Maybe is contains more than you want to know if you have your favorite GF items already scoped out, but if you are starting out or even trying to expand your horizons, this book is a great study guide until you get your bearings in the gluten free world.

Cecelia’s Shopping Guides are available in three awesome variations:

Gluten-Free – All products listed are gluten-free and wheat-free.

Gluten/Casein Free – All products listed are gluten-free, wheat-free, casein-free, milk-free, and lactose-free. Perfect for anyone on a gluten/casein free (GFCF) diet.

I learned how to shop gluten free, cook gluten free and travel gluten free from Living Without in those first crucial weeks and months. I knew no one else who was gluten free, so they answered all my questions, and gave me all my advice. Years later, I still anxiously await each new issue. I have since added a few other magazines on gluten free living, but if you only get one, get this one! This is one of the best gluten free resources you will find anywhere!

Living Without bills itself as “The magazine for people with allergies and food sensitivities.” Each recipe, and there are many, is free of gluten, dairy and the top 8 allergens, or tells you how to make substitutions, and includes articles relating to living without multiple ingredients.

Some great monthly resources for beginners are the Gluten Free Quick-Start Guide and Casein Free Quick Start Guide located in the back of the magazine. They explain the basics of what to eat and what to steer clear of. The Substitution Solutions page has been in the front of my recipe notebook since I received my very first issue, and gives you the basics of gluten free (dairy free if you wish) baking. Once you get your first copy, take this page out of your future copies and pass it along to relatives to explain the basics to them!

Living Withoutis full of interesting articles, helpful tips, medical information and awesome allergy-friendly recipes, and more. Many of the recipes in my permanent gluten free collection are out of this magazine. Each bi-monthly issue includes:

Gluten Free and Dairy Free Recipes

Allergy-Friendly Restaurant Guidance

The Latest Research on Allergies

Questions for Your Allergist and Doctor

Kids and Allergies

Gluten Free Resources and Support

New Gluten Free Food Products

New! From the author of one of my very favorite gluten free resources, Cecelia’s Marketplace Gluten Free Shopping Guide, is this great new book called Cecelia’s Marketplace Easy 30 Day Gluten-Free Diet. This is a great way to begin a gluten free diet with no guesswork needed. Just follow the easy guides.

Dr. Mara Matison has created this 30 day plan, not as a weight loss diet, but to determine if gluten is negatively impacting your body. Step-by-step instructions, a 30 day gluten free menu plan, mini GF grocery guide, kitchen and cooking tips, and 30 delicious gluten free dinner recipes are all included in this beautiful book full of full color photos. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack and drink ideas are also included, along with possible symptoms you may be experiencing that could be attributed to gluten and testing options to check for celiac disease and gluten intolerance.

This really is an EASY way to begin a gluten free diet, get more ideas and recipes for your own gluten free cooking, or buy a copy for a friend or relative. Each Day’s menu includes a full day of meals and snacks, with the dinner recipe, photos, and of course the substitution list if you want to swap something out. Check marks next to each item indicate to refer to the gluten free shopping guide pages for specific brand ideas that are gluten free.

Starting a gluten free diet has never been easier. This book lays it all out for you! Here’s an example of what you’ll find on one of the thirty days:

Breakfast:
Banana Pineapple Smoothie (Recipe included)

Optional Snack:
Roasted Nuts (Gluten Free brands listed)

Lunch:
Turkey Sandwich with Potato Chips (GF brands listed for both items)

Optional Snack:
Apple Sauce

Dinner:
Stir-Fried Chicken & Vegetables in Gluten Free Teriyaki Sauce with Brown Rice
(Recipe, Photo & GF brands listed)

Optional Snack:
Fresh Pineapple Slices

The author states in the beginning of the book that this plan is not for weight loss purposes, but that whole day sounds like many weight loss diet plan menus to me. I bet you would lose weight on this plan.

You’ll find other dinner recipes such as Shrimp Kebobs with Grilled Vegetables and Quinoa, Grilled Steak with Vegetables and Sweet Potato Fries, Chicken Pasta Primavera in Garlic Sauce and many more yummy recipes and ideas.

This is the easiest way to go gluten free – no guessing about menus, recipes or ingredients. Just follow the menu for each of the 30 days or swap things around using the handy lists provided. No guesswork at all! This would also make a great gift – it’s full of gorgeous photos on glossy paper and is the helpful, quality book I’ve come to expect from Cecelia’s Marketplace.

Just give the book, add it to a gift basket, or make one of the items in the book and give that as part of the gift, too.

Gluten Free Made Simple
by Carol Field Dahlstrom, Elizabeth Dahlstrom Burnley & Marcia Shultz Dahlstrom

Gluten-Free Made Simple is a beautiful gift-worthy cookbook. It’s heavy and colorful, full of tips, variations, nutritional information and photos on that fun, thick, glossy paper that makes such a nice gift book, in my opinion. This cookbook promises. “real food, for real people – real easy!” And it delivers. Icons helpfully indicate high protein, low fat, egg free, casein free, whole grain, or vegetarian. Many recipes include preparation photos for beginners, as well as tempting photographs of the finished dish. This book is 216 pages of over 100 easy-to-make gluten free dishes that I would be thrilled to receive as a gift! Click here to find out more about this book.

The Food Lovers Make It Paleo
by Bill Staley & Haley Mason

Another favorite gift book I’ve recently run across is The Food Lovers Make It Paleo. I’m not on the Paleo diet, and the thought of this book actually really intimidated me. It’s bigger and heavier than a college textbook – but what you get for your money is so well worth it! This 443 heavy, glossy pages with over 500 beautiful photos. Now that I’ve read through it, I could totally eat the Paleo way if I got to eat all this! Everything sounds and looks extremely appetizing, healthy and enticing. This is the perfect book for my brother and his wife who are vegan, gluten free, soy free, dairy free, sugar free. The yummy desserts in here are sweetened with maple syrup and look amazing. When I first got this cookbook, I was intrigued by the “Infamous” Bacon Chocolate Chip Cookies (p. 364), and had to try them out. The ingredients are: nitrite free bacon, maple syrup, almond flour, baking soda, salt, eggs, vanilla, coconut oil and dark chocolate chips. Those flavors do combine to make some deliciously interesting cookies, believe it or not! All the categories in the book have tons of great recipes and there’s nothing in this huge book that I wouldn’t be thrilled to eat. I seriously LOVE this cookbook and anyone who is remotely interested in this type of food – or just a culinary adventure, would love this as a gift! (FYI: This cute, healthy looking couple on the front are the authors) Click here to find out more about this book.

Cecelia’s Marketplace International Classics: Gluten-Free Mexican
by Dr. Mara Matison

Another gorgeous gift-worthy cookbook on that nice, heavy, glossy paper is Cecelia’s Marketplace International Classics: Gluten-Free Mexican from the same folks who bring you one of my all-time favorite gluten free books, Cecelia’s Marketplace Gluten Free Grocery Shopping Guide (see below). Dr. Mara Matison fills these 110 pages with many traditional and beautiful Mexican classics, with a full-page photo for each recipe. You’ll find sections for Appetizer, Soups, Sides, Sauces, Seasonings, Entrees, Desserts & Drinks. I think I’d combine this book in a basket with the Sangria ingredients (page 105), and maybe a CD of Mexican music, and it would be an awesome gift! Allergens for each recipe are clearly marked on the bottom of each page (or lack thereof, since these are super allergy friendly!) I just noticed their December bundle special – buy this book and the one below (Shopping Guide), and get the following: 1 GF Guide, 1 GF Mexican Cookbook, 2 GF Dining Out Cards, 10 Gluten-Free Safety Labels all for 20% off. Click here for details.

by Matison & Matison

This is one of my all-time favorite gluten free books. It’s not a cookbook, it’s a shopping guide. Yes, there are apps that show you what to buy gluten free at the grocery store, but this is my go-to book for what really is gluten free at the grocery store. It’s low tech, but dependable and easy to navigate what brands you can buy at your local non-specialty stores. It includes 37,000 + items – many are things you were buying before you went gluten free, and it’s nice to see that you can keep buying them. I recommend this book almost daily to someone and it’s perfect for you, if you are newly gluten free, for that grandparent who has a desire but not the know-how to host your gluten free kids, or for a for any friend who has just begun a gluten free diet. They have gluten free/dairy free and gluten free/soy free versions as well. I just noticed their December bundle special – buy this book and the one above (Mexican cookbook), and get the following: 1 GF Guide, 1 GF Mexican Cookbook, 2 GF Dining Out Cards, 10 Gluten-Free Safety Labels all for 20% off. Click here for details.

Mommy, What is Celiac Disease?
by Katie Chalmers

Here’s a fun gift for your child’s teacher, pediatrician, librarian, neighbor, church worker, grandparent – or for your child. I love this little book that explains the details of celiac disease in just enough detail and with the perfect analogies to convey education and understanding of your celiac child’s condition. It’s all presented from a positive perspective and encourages embracing the new adventure following a young child’s celiac diagnosis. GREAT BOOK! Click here to read my compete review of this book or visit Katie’s Website here.

The Healthy Edge Cookbook
by Amber Thiel & April Willer

Interested in Gluten Free Weight Loss? The Healthy Edge Cookbook was just sent to me by the authors, who after losing their mother to breast cancer, embarked on getting and helping others live The Healthy Edge Lifestyle. This book is a stand-alone cookbook, but is meant to be part of the 8-week online weight-loss/get healthy/coaching program. The first 2 weeks are free. There aren’t too many gluten free weight loss programs, so this one caught my attention. (90 out of 110 recipes are gluten free and low glycemic, and the chef’s section helps you convert the remaining ones.) With their online “transformation program,” you get a video on insulin resistance, and empowering audio, grocery and pantry lists, 14 day meal plan, fitness plan, recipes and much more. The book itself is sprinkled with before and after photos and testimonials of folks who’ve lost weight and improved their health on the program, and yes, it includes desserts, in case you’re wondering. The website claims, “The average results of an individual who completed The Health Edge lifestyle program released 9.16 pounds and 2.3 total inches in their waist and hips during the program.” It’s 157 spiral bound pages of glossy recipes and photos. Click here to find out more about the book and program. The book is on sale for the month of December.

The Healthy Edge has also created a Holiday E-book with 27 whole food based and gluten-free recipes. They are donating $2.00 of every purchase to feeding starving children. Their goal is to raise $2,000 before Christmas. Find out more here.

Gluten Free Magazines

I couldn’t do a gift-giving book guide without including my favorite magazines. Here are the ones I subscribe to and think any of these would make great gifts!

Living Without

The first great magazine that I found was Living Without, and I have continued my subscription since that first week of going gluten free. They say they are, “The magazine for people with allergies and food sensitivities.” Some great monthly resources for beginners are the Gluten Free Quick-Start Guide and Casein Free Quick Start Guide located in the back of the magazine. They explain the basics of what to eat and what to steer clear of. Once you get your first copy, take this page out of your future copies and pass it along to relatives to explain the basics to them! Living Without is full of interesting articles, helpful tips, medical information and awesome allergy-friendly recipes. Many of the recipes in my gluten free collection are out of this magazine. See more here.

Gluten Free Living

Gluten-Free Living is the second Great magazine I found for GFree lifestyle information and I’ve been a subscriber for years. They publish quarterly and claim to be “Leading the way to a happy, healthy, gluten free life.” This one also has a Basic Diet page for beginners near the back called “Is it Gluten Free?” They have a new products section, tips, recipes, medical research, ask the doctor, advice and lots of informative articles. I find this magazine is more celiac focused, but it’s still helpful if you’re gluten free for other reasons. See more here.

Delight Gluten Free

The third Gluten Free magazine I subscribe to is Delight Gluten Free. It is published quarterly and claims to be “THE magazine for those with celiac disease, gluten intolerance, food allergies & sensitivities.” This magazine has recently changed ownership and has definitely taken a step up in quality and content. You’ll find gluten free celebrity interviews, tons of recipes, tips, medical answers and much more.

Easy Eats

This is a fairly new digital only magazine. Lots of fun articles and recipes, this “magazine” is a slick and easy to navigate bi-monthly publication is accessible from your computer, ipad, iphone or Android. The magazine’s editor-in-chief is Silvana Nardone of Slivana’s Kitchen, Rachel Ray Magazine, cookbook author, blogger & former bakery owner. Several well-known gluten free chefs and bloggers contribute. Find out more here.

Are you trying to expand your current diet options? Then this handy guidebook by Matison & Matison may just what you need!

What will you find in this handy book? It’s over 500 pages packed with alphabetized categories of products and brands that are, at the time of the publication of the book anyway, gluten free. It is, however, small enough to take to the store if needed, or use it to make your list ahead of time. Besides grocery items (which is the majority of the book), there is a small Gluten Free Over the Counter Pharmacy Guide, including soap, deodorant, hair color, vitamins, medicine, and more.

“This easy to use 4.5″ x 6.5″ book lists over 37,000 thousand gluten-free products that are available nationwide. This guide is designed for people with celiac disease, gluten intolerance and gluten sensitivity.” (from their website)

As an example – there are about 21 pages of gluten free ice cream products! Maybe more than you want to know if you have your favorite GF items already scoped out, but if you are starting out or even trying to expand your horizons, this book is a great study guide until you get your bearings in the gluten free world.

Especially if you are avoiding multiple ingredients as listed in one of the versions below – I would call these books a MUST HAVE.

Gluten/Casein/Soy Free – All products listed are gluten-free, wheat-free, casein-free, milk-free, lactose-free and soy-free.

I recommend this book all the time, and I also refer to this book often!

It’s for anyone looking for some new, creative ideas to spice up their gluten free menus.

The book includes vegetable recipes like Mediterranean Orange-Olive Salad and Vegetable Tempura with Wasabi Dipping Sauce. There are also soups and stews, appetizers, quick and yeast breads, breakfast recipes, and decadent desserts.

The first recipe I tried was Potatoes with Mustard Cream. They’re rich (although mostly fat-free) and interesting. The combination of the rosemary and smoked paprika on the potatoes and the ingredients in the sauce is unlike anything I’ve made before, with a nice layering of unusual flavors, and I’ll be making it again! The same sauce is recommended to accompany the Roasted Asparagus. Sounds great!

Carol includes baking instructions for vegans, but recipes for all of us! I made the Basic Scones with Drizzle from page 173 and added the chocolate chips as suggested on the following page, with a white chocolate drizzle. They were beautiful and gourmet – not in any way a recipe I would expect from a vegetarian cookbook. Add some fruit from the suggestion list and you’ll have an entirely different scone to enjoy or bring to a brunch.

Each recipe has nutritional information, but sadly no photographs. The recipes are easy, delicious, and won’t scare you off. The book is full of helpful tips and suggestions for anyone – not just people on special diets. The author does also state that “all but 5 recipes are appropriate for vegans as well.” (p.5)

Next on my list of recipes to try from this cookbook: Rosemary Focaccia with Onion Marmalade and then Butternut Squash Soup with Chipotle Cream and Breadsticks. Can’t wait!

You can get your copy wherever books are sold including natural food stores, bookstores, or Avery/Penguin Group.

Connect with Carol Fenster on her blog.

Thanks to Clare at Penguin for sending me the book to try out. The title may have caused me to pass it by, but that would have been my loss!

I got online and read all I could find. I ordered books. And I looked for useful magazines to make our transition and journey easier. Here are the 3 favorite magazines I subscribe to.

Another page that’s located near the back each time is the Living Without Pantry Substitutions. I lived on this page when I first began gluten free baking and cooking. They are kind enough to have this page on their website, too. I cut it out and made it the cover of my recipe notebook of newly collected and adapted gluten free recipes (and it’s still there today – years later.)

Living Without is full of interesting articles, helpful tips, medical information and awesome allergy-friendly recipes. Many of the recipes in my gluten free collection are out of this magazine. The June/July issue contains Best Allergy Friendly Waffle Recipes, 4th of July Gluten Free in Washington, D.C., Guide to Safe Restaurant Dining, Pasta Salad and Brownie recipes, Special Autism and GFCF diet section, medical research, and much, much more !! Run, don’t walk to get this bi-monthly magazine! They take Canadian as well as US subscribers.

Digital: The Living Without Website is also a great resource! It’s tons of their articles all in one place. There are topics for Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Other Allergies, Kids & Allergies, Ask Your Doctor, Healthy Living, & Newly Diagnosed. Tons of allergy-friendly recipes and their great cooking substitution page are also there. You can sign up for their weekly recipe emails, too. They have a bookstore with their favorite books and some great ebook downloads that they have put together. Bookmark this site!

Note: Living Without is currently a Gluten Freeville Advertiser. I love the resource so much, I asked them to be represented on my site daily to be sure you knew about them!

Gluten-Free Living

Gluten-Free Living is the second Great magazine I found for GFree lifestyle information and I’ve been a subscriber for years. They publish quarterly and claim to be “Leading the way to a happy, healthy, gluten free life.” This one also has a Basic Diet page for beginners near the back called “Is it Gluten Free?” They have a new products section, tips, recipes, medical research, ask the doctor, advice and lots of informative articles.

If you pick up this quarter’s issue, and you should, you’ll find a guide to gluten free cupcake bakeries, cupcake recipes, Gluten Free Energy Bar ratings and reviews, Egg recipes, Gluten Free/Diabetic articles, Celiac Related Skin Disorder Issues, Avoiding Tension over Celiac Disease Testing and much, much more! I find this magazine is more celiac focused, but it’s still helpful if you’re gluten free for other reasons. They take US subscriptions and add $6 per year for those outside the US. Click here for a list of stores that carry Gluten Free Living.

Digital: Their website has just a few articles and resources. My favorite page there is the ingredient page, which I refer to often. It explains some ingredients that you may be wondering about and their gluten free status. They also have an email newsletter.

They take Canadian and International subscribers, as well as those in the US.

This magazine also has the 2 quick start guides for GF and GFCF diets (at the front), and a handy chart of allergens of the current recipes included. If you get the current issue, you will find a cover article about the Bachelor’s Tenley Molzahn including her favorite recipes, Setting Up your First Kitchen in Gluten Free Style, Migraines and Celiac, A review of GF guru Carol Fenster’s newest book, Gluten Free Lemony Inspired Meals on a Budget, Ask the Doctor section, Gluten Free Travel articles, Healthy Living Articles, and lots of recipes.

Digital: Delight Gluten Free has a website that is currently basically an index of what’s in the latest issue. You can get their digital magazine editions for current or back issues for your computer and get their reader for the iphone, ipad and Android. You can also register for weekly recipe emails.

WIN A BOOK

In honor of Celiac Awareness Month, Katie Chalmers and Gluten Freeville are offering the opportunity for 5 Gluten Freeville readers to win a copy of Mommy, What is Celiac Disease?

Thanks so much for participating and thanks to Katie for providing the books!
The winners of the random drawing are: Caitlin Iafrate, Amy Colling, Holly Jacobs, Tera – Mom of 7 & Marlene (orshin)

ABOUT THE BOOK

As adults know, going gluten free can be overwhelming both physically and emotionally. It is noless daunting for a child to hear that their lives will be permanently affected by the diagnosis of celiac disease. Finally, here’s a great resource to help children see the positive side of life with celiac!

This children’s book by Katie Chalmers, published last fall, explains celiac on a small child’s level by using a positive conversation between a mother and daughter. It explains just enough about celiac, gluten, and the effects of gluten on the body of a person with celiac and encourages a positive, adventurous attitude about the new life ahead for a celiac child.

What is the treatment? The book gives the “sunny” side of not needing medication, trying out new foods and recipes, and still being able to participate in the fun events of childhood. It also discusses what the new lifestyle will consist of – that many of the old favorites are gluten free and the rest can be made in a new way.

Another helpful thing about the story is that it highlights the fact that it is not contagious, which is a key concept for other children to understand. It’s high quality, high gloss, nicely illustrated and shows kids that they can be ambassadors and role models for others in their new adventure.

This book is a great overview and a perfect resource for any child that has celiac or has any contact with anyone with celiac.

Families with small children where any of the members have celiac

Classroom resource for children’s class where there is a celiac child

Great basic education for teachers, grandparents, relatives and caregivers of children
with celiac

Health care providers or anyone that works with celiac children and families

Church groups that have a celiac child

For educating the families of your celiac child’s friends

I’d recommend buying a few so that you can enlighten those who come in contact with your celiac child in a simple and non-threatening manner, while bringing your child to a place of acceptance and even excitement about the adventure ahead.
